Ryan had another treatment yesterday and we hit a little bit of a road bump. His labs and everything sill look good considering the Leukemia. It was a long day because he needed another lumbar puncture and the PACU was running late. He was taken for the lumbar puncture around 2 and after that we went back to the oncology clinic for his second chemo infusion. He was scheduled to get two chemo medications he has had before. One of the medications carries a high risk of having an allergic reaction to it and it usually happens with the second infusion. Yesterday was his second infusion of this medication. After the infusion started he had some chest heaviness so they stopped the infusion right away and a bunch of other nurses showed up and they gave him rescue medications. He did clear his throat once which can be concerning for his airway. After that the doctor came in and talked to us and explained what options he has. This medication is really important for him to get. We are back today to try the medication again. They are going to slow the rate down for the first hour to see how he tolerates the medication. If he has a reaction again the alternative is coming in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for two weeks for a shot. Each dose of the infusion requires 6 shots and there are about 6 infusions of that medication left. So, Ryan, Jesse and I figured it would be worth it to try again to hopefully avoid having to get the shots. Ryan seems to be doing ok generally. He is quiet and doesn't talk much about his feelings but he still has his sense of humor. He and Jesse were joking around a lot yesterday, especially when I told them that a sign of a reaction to the medication could be an "impending send of doom". He didn't need blood yesterday but will need to come back next week before his scheduled day to get a blood transfusion. He also got to meet one of the therapy dogs, Lawton. He was so gentle and even had some tricks!
